My daughter will be starting high school in the Austin area in just under a month, and I’m about to write her an informal Dad’s Guide to Getting through High School that she can refer to every now and again (even if she did roll her eyes when I gave it to her, I suspect she’d still look at it in the away-from-Dad privacy of her room).
If you could advise my daughter on how to approach, live through, and survive her high school years, what would you say? I’d love it if you could comment on this FriendFeed page, where some of my Twitter pals have already chimed in.
Of course, if you’re not a FriendFeed user or otherwise would prefer commenting directly to this blog, that’d work just fine, too.
I hope to incorporate some or all of your suggestions directly into a page of the guide.

28|Jul|2008 1My advice would be to take advantage of travel abroad opportunities offered through your school. My best memory of high school was my senior trip to Europe with my French teacher and some friends. It was an incredible personal growth experience, and it opened the door for me to study abroad in college and pursue my interest in foreign languages and cultures. I recommend that anyone who can afford doing it DO IT! Get a summer job to pay for it. It’s soooo worth it!

28|Jul|2008 2My advice is to not get caught up in the popularity mind games that people play or worry about what others think of you. I know it’s easy to say now that I’m older, but do things you want to do, don’t worry about doing things to impress others. You will just waste your time and eventually those other people won’t matter any more (or didn’t care in the first place).
Don’t be in a rush to graduate early. Enjoy high school life–college and work will come soon enough.
