If this inspirational, tear-jerking JOLT from Andrea Ross is any indication, I missed one heckuva Podcasters Across Borders conference this year.

In her talk, Andrea shares stories of the relationships she’s built and the friendships she’s made through her work on the Just One More Book podcast and We Can Rebuild Her breast-cancer journal. Andrea’s message to content creators everywhere: Your work does matter. People are reading, watching, and listening (even if they don’t always tell you!).

Michael Lazerow isn’t shy about sharing his views on Facebook’s potential. He says, in no uncertain terms, that the social network is “changing brand advertising forever.”

Michael is the CEO of Buddy Media and will be presenting at the free LiveBar event in New York City that I’ve organized organized for LiveWorld for Wednesday, March 24 (disclosure: LiveWorld is a Buddy Media partner).

Michael has reason to be bullish, after all. Facebook boasts a massive userbase of more than 400 million and a robust toolset for targeted advertising.

As part of previewing the LiveBar event, I spoke with Michael about the state of Facebook marketing and advertising [Click if you can't see the video] and wanted to share his comments here.

* Michael fields a Twitter question from @EricSchwartzman about the state of Facebook analytics.

* Michael says that evaluating Facebook’s impact on a business is “very much a work in progress.”

* Michael offers several examples of successful brand efforts in Facebook:

Anheuser-Busch in beer/alcohol vertical

Southwest in travel

Twilight in entertainment

Pampers and Febreze (“Thanks, Mom“) from Proctor & Gamble (LiveWorld client)

* Michael argues that the companies seeing the most social media success are those that “fully commit.”

* The second-annual Social Media Week is underway in five cities around the world. If you’re reading this post from New York, San Francisco, Toronto, London, or Sao Palo, you still have time to register and attend one or several high-quality events between tonight and Friday.

* In making the case that Facebook could become the world’s leading news reader, Marshall Kirkpatrick includes and explains this nugget: “Partial feeds are good for readers.” On Facebook? Agreed. In an RSS reader? No way.

* Marcel Santilli is a talented social media and design guy here in Austin whom I’ve just started working with on some visual projects for the Social Media Breakfast series. Using some of Callie Richmond’s brilliant shots from our event in Austin last week, Marcel put together a collage and video (also below). Great stuff!

[RSS and e-mail readers: You may need to click through to the original post to see the embedded video]

[RSS and e-mail readers: You may need to click through to this original post to see the embedded video above.]

* Speaking of the Social Media Breakfast, the mega SMB during SXSW Interactive that I whispered about a few weeks ago is ON. If you’ll be in Austin for “South by,” please mark down late morning/early afternoon of Sunday, February March 14. Venue, time, and program still to come.

* So the iPad won’t serve as the ultimate device for creating content. I’m OK with that. It’s still going to disrupt the heck out of how we consume media, and present “legendary” opportunities for sales and marketing. I can’t wait.

* Like Dan York, I’m stuck on the Foursquare fence. Yes, it’s fun having an ambient awareness of my social media pals and trying to unseat them as mayors (my current quest is to knock Terry Melle from his mayoral perch at Hill Country Bible Church Northwest). But … I don’t know that the gameplay is enduringly compelling (following “Bravolebrities” isn’t exactly my thing, for example). There has to be something more, right?

First, a disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer and don’t pretend to play one on this blog, or in any other venue of commentary.

With that out of the way … what if retweets are an infringement of US copyright law?

That fascinating prospect was raised by attorney Glenn Manishin (@GlennM) during the “Public Policy & Law” panel discussion at last week’s 140 Conference in Los Angeles.

The argument that Glenn laid out for the potential illegality of the retweet went something like this:

1) In its official terms of service, Twitter says users own and “retain rights” to their content. (Users also grant Twitter royalty-free rights to distribute that content)

2) If users own their content, then that content–as long as it’s an original expression and not simply a fact or idea–can be copyrighted.

3) A retweet is often a verbatim reproduction, or close to 100% in “amount and substantiality” of the original work, meaning it may not fall within the acceptable boundaries of the “fair use” doctrine.

Result = retweets of original works are copyright violations?

I grabbed Glenn at the end of the 140 Conference for a quick video interview, and asked him to explain his line of reasoning in further detail.

(RSS readers: You may need to click through to the original blog post to see the embedded video below).

Twitter is set to incorporate the retweet into its standard functionality. Any chance the company should take one last pause and rethink that decision?

I certainly can’t, and yet that’s the reality facing hundreds of people who live on the streets of Austin.

Enter Alan Graham and the Austin-based nonprofit Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF), which has just kicked off a campaign to distribute cold drinking water to the capital city’s homeless population.

Alan is using social media to get out the word about MLF’s efforts, including Twitter (@MLFNow), blogging, and You Tube, and he’s asking for fundraising support.

Here’s a video from Alan with more details:

What could be funnier than watching a couple of Grumpy Old (Business)Men get stuck in the mud in off-road vehicles on an Oregon beach? That’s for you to decide, but this video certainly had me in stitches.

(RSS and e-mail readers: You may need to click through to the original post to see the video.)

The vid is the latest in a series chronicling the Pacific Coast road trip of Allan Jenkins and Lee Hopkins, a pair of overseas business communicators (Allan is an expat Yankee living in Denmark; Lee is a red-blooded Aussie bloke) who are trekking from Seattle to San Francisco in advance of the 2009 IABC World Conference, which begins this Sunday.

Allan and Lee co-hosted a business podcast together a few years back, but had never met face-to-face until this week (perhaps not that surprising these days, right?). They’re obviously making up for lost time.

I’ll also be headed out to the IABC conference this weekend–though I guess I’m a bit boring, because I’m flying to San Francisco–and look forward to catching up with Allan and Lee at the FIR Dinner on Sunday night. They haven’t met me face-to-face yet, either, but I don’t suspect that will prevent us from having a few laughs.

To see the latest updates from the Grumpy Old Men Road Trip, follow @AllanJenkins, @LeeHopkins, and the #GOM09 hashtag on Twitter.

It is with some apprehension that I enter into the world of online video production.

In the audio or video discussions that often pop up on blogs and podcasts, I’ve always felt aligned to the former. Whether it’s how my brain is wired–I am more of an auditory learner than a visual one–the memories of my childhood spent listening to Red Sox games with the transistor radio next to my pillow, or a general reluctance to throw myself into the major time suck that is shooting and editing video, I’ve spent far more time over the years producing and consuming web-distributed audio content.

And yet … despite its multitasking and rich storytelling potential, audio is simply no match for video in the tell-your-friend-about-it department.

Think about it: When’s the last time you sent an e-mail or tweet with the “check out this great audio clip!” recommendation?

And so, as part of my effort to produce content for LiveWorld that others will want to talk about, and share, I’m trying my hand at online video. It doesn’t mean I’m abandoning my audio work completely, but it does mean that I’ll be spending plenty of time in iMovie ‘09 and Final Cut Express.

Two of my first video productions–interviews with PBS Engage’s Jayme Swain and C.C. Chapman from The Advance Guard–are below. If you do offer feedback, be gentle; I know I have plenty to learn!

Inspired by the efforts of Neville Hobson, I’ve put together a montage of family photos from 2008 as a way of recapping the last 12 months (with a helping hand from Animoto).

Here’s hoping 2009 will be as memorable as 2008 has been. Happy new year!

Part 1

Programming note: In spite of following Animoto’s estimates when choosing a musical accompaniment that would accommodate all 133 image and text slides I wanted to include in this video, some 30 photos were cut out of the final montage (not something one can control, apparently, on Animoto). I may eventually mix those missing images into a follow-up production, but for now, you can refer to my Best-of-2008 set on Flickr to get a sense of the full range of photos I had hoped would appear in the video above.

Update: Here’s Part 2, which comprises the 30 missing slides from Part 1.
